Unakka Chemeen chammanthi / Dry shrimp chutney

To clean the dry shrimp - you can dry roast it on a hot pan until it is warmed thoroughly and then spread it on to a flat plate and either remove the head one by one or you could roll it under a bottle or chappathi roller - the heads will get crushed and you can collect just the shrimp kernals and store them for future use.


  1. Dry shrimp - 1 cup cleaned and head removed .
  2. Shallot - 1
  3. Grated coconut - 3/4'th cup
  4. Chilly powder - 1 tsp
  5. Tamarind/vinegar - to taste
  6. salt - to taste
  7. curry leaves - few

Method :
Add all the ingredients into a food processor and blend to a coarse mixture.
