Green Peas Masala

This is one dish that reminds me of "Vasanthi" who introduced me to Green peas while I was a kid.She used to stay at our home and help my Amma out with household chores. At that time I couldnt even imagine having chappathi without meat , fish or egg curry and Vasanthi would persuade us to try her greenpeas masala with extra garlic - According to her "The more garlic you add the better it tastes ".This is the recipe she followed , it is very simple and quick and tastes good as well. You could add garam masala and coconut milk - the simple version tastes pretty good too.

 Ingredients:

  1. Dry Green Peas - 2 cups
  2. Onions - 2 chopped
  3. Tomatoes - 2 medium large chopped
  4. Garlic pods - 8 cloves chopped
  5. Curry leaves - 2 springs
  6. Coriander powder - 1 tbsp
  7. Chilly powder - 1 tbsp
  8. Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
  9. Oil - 2 tbsp
  10. Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  11. Salt - to taste
  12. Coriander leaves/Cilantro - 1 tbsp chopped

Method:
Soak the greenpeas in water overnight.
Heat oil in a pressurecooker and add in the mustard seeds.
When it splutters add in the chopped onion, garlic and curry leaves and saute until it starts to soften.
Add in the chilly , corriander and Turmeric powder and stir fry until raw smell is gone.
Add in the tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes start falling apart and oil starts separating.
Add in the rinsed and drained green peas and salt to taste and mix well.
Pour enough water to cover the green peas plus 1 cup more.
Close the pressure cooker lid and put the weight on.
Cook for 10 whistles and turn the flame off.
Let the pressure release by itself.
Open and taste , if you like it more gravy like add more water or coconut milk as needed.
Garnish with the chopped Cilantro.
Serve with Chappathi.
