Fish Curry with Green Tomatoes

Pacha thakkali itta Meen curry or Fish curry with green tomatoes as the name suggests is a curry where Raw tomatoes or tomatillos are used as the souring agent instead of cocum , tamarind or mango.



Ingredients:

  1. Fish - 2 lbs (I used Mullet skinned and cut)
  2. Green tomatoes - 2 diced
  3. Shallots - 3 crushed
  4. Ginger - 1 inch piece crushed
  5. Garlic - 5 cloves crushed
  6. Green chillies - 4 slit
  7. curry leaves - 2 springs
  8. Red chilly powder - 1 tsp
  9. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  10. grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  11. mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  12. Oil - 2 tsp
  13. shallots sliced- 1

Method:

Grind the coconut to a fine paste with water and keep aside.Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan and add the crushed ginger,garlic, shallots,1 spring of curry leaves and saute for minutes.

Add the raw tomatoes ,chilly powder and turmeric powder and saute .Add 1 cup of water and salt to taste and bring to a boil.Add the fish pieces to this gravy and simmer until the fish is cooked.Add in the coconut paste and bring to a simmer, and then turn the flame off.

Heat oil in a small pan and fry the mustard seeds.When it splutters add the sliced shallots and curry leaves and fry until it is brown.Pour this over the fish curry and keep covered for 30 minutes.Serve with rice.
